Marma points are energy points in the body used for healing in Ayurveda. They can be compared to acupuncture points in Chinese Medicine.

The focus of marma point massage is primarily to manipulate subtle energy or prana, but physically they’re also very effective for relieving stiff muscles and boosting circulation.

Marma therapy is used extensively throughout Ayurveda, and is considered important in self-care and self-healing practices.

Talahridaya

Known as the point at the ‘heart of the hand’, this marma point is found at the center of the palm, and measures ½ anguli (half a finger unit) in size.

This point is closely linked to Anahata, the heart chakra, and is thought of as an important point in stimulating circulation throughout the whole body. It links closely to the lungs and respiratory health, and is also a vital marma point to work with regarding communication.

Massage this point in a strong, circular motion for roughly five minutes. Sesame or almond oil is best used, with essential oils like eucalyptus* for opening blocked sinuses or ‘energising’ the hands. You can also energise the point further by rubbing the palms together until they feel warm.

*Be aware some essential oils are considered endocrine disruptors.

When I run yoga for Menopause masterclasses and immersions, women often asked what they should get checked with their doctor.

As a yoga teacher, this is outside my scope of practice and is something we discuss in my yoga teacher training. I complied this with the help of my doctor and a nutritionist.

Yoga can not change our feminine hormones as we go through menopause but it can help regulate our nervous systems, reduce stress, relax and give us space to reflect.

Blood Pressure and Cholesterol
Both our blood pressure and cholesterol can go up at menopause because oestrogen is no longer helping the arteries and veins expand and contract so easily.

Fasting Glucose
While it`s normal to become more curvaceous especially around the belly (5 kilos), we are aware these days through `wellness culture` that visceral fat that accumulates around our waistline is unhealthy.

Because we become more prone to insulin resistance which is the precursor to type two diabetes, fasting glucose with insulin pathology testing can help us to make changes to our diet.

Vitamin D
It`s good to know what your vitamin D score is because it supports healthy bones and muscles. Women going through menopause and beyond are more at risk of developing low bone density than men.

Thyroid
Signs of thyroid dysfunction either hypo or hyper can mimic the signs of menopause transition.

Liver Function
Research has shown that our liver function decreases as we age and it can reduce by as much as 35%. Our liver processes the blood passing through the stomach and intestines and breaks down, balances, and creates the nutrients and also metabolizes hormones.

Iron
Feeling tired then get your iron levels checked. Anaemia is common in post-menopausal women.

The calcium score is a scan that can ascertain how much calcium or plaque is collecting in your arteries and gives you a baseline to work from. We can`t remove the arterial plaque it is possible to stabilise and reduce it.

C-reactive Protein
This will tell you how much inflammation is in your body and you can adjust your diet, lifestyle and exercise routine to support you.
