I was listening to a podcast this afternoon on Changing Seasons with @jodyvassallobeautifulfood in conversation with @drclaudiawelch called the art of subtraction.

It really spoke to me and the call to embrace my forest dwelling phase of life.

Now that the pitta fire has left and the urge to be seduced, distracted or enamoured by a new project or the lure of dipping my fingers into many honey pots at the same time has dispersed, what is left?

The desire for quiet, stillness, and emptiness to simply be. Goodbye to the hustle, the needing to be seen, and hello to the loving and tender embrace of emptiness.

The art of subtraction is a call to release all that no longer supports us as we grow into our elderhood. This is the focus of our vata years as we no longer have the energy to fire up projects because we have changed, matured, and grown into our skins.

Strength and power: the science behind muscles and joints in menopause and beyond is one of the presentations we look at on the last day of my 40-hour Yoga for Menopause Wellbeing program.

Joint pain or arthralgia shows up for over 50% of women in menopause.

E2 or estradiol supports joint mobility, integrity of tendons and ligaments, muscle strength and elasticity and helps keep fascia hydrated.

Over the last decade or more I’ve listened to women commenting in my classes, and now at 58 in my own practice, that their hands hurt in poses they used to love such as down dog, plank or even table top.

Hand pain can be as result of less fat padding the hands, inflammation, tendinitis, carpal tunnel or osteoarthritis combined with muscular weakness.

We can modify many poses like plank into a forearm plank and even create hands free classes to support women 40+.

It’s important to keep your upper body and arms strong as we get older to counteract osteoporosis in the upper back and because strength in the appendicular limbs is an indicator for longevity.

I encourage women to mix yoga with resistance training to strengthen the upper body without placing repeated strain on the wrists and hands.
