FATIGUE is one of the most common and distressing symptoms associated with menopause.

Over 95% of perimenopausal and menopausal women complaining of fatigue and dreaming of a more restful night’s sleep.

A study of 300 women showed 85.3% of post-menopausal women and 46.5% of peri-menopausal women reported symptoms of physical and mental exhaustion compared to just 19.7% of the pre-menopausal women.

Throughout the menopause transition, fatigue can happen because of changing hormone levels, stress, thyroid imbalance, adrenal fatigue, and gut and sleep disruption. Women may feel physically or mentally tired, or both. We may experience menopausal fatigue and other symptoms throughout our menopausal transition.

The remedy for some cases of fatigue at menopause can be obvious, while other types of fatigue require much more self-observation and self-inquiry to find the proper mode of treatment.

Yoga is an optimal healing modality for fatigue not only because it addresses the physical, emotional and energetic causes of fatigue but also because it fosters and facilitates the self-observation and self-inquiry required to understand the roots of this disharmony.

A deep sense of rest can also be experienced from extended holds in restorative poses, such as child, supine bound angle, twists, and savasana. Gentle yoga will help to regulate, nourish and replenish the energy and muscles of the body. The restorative poses mentioned above will also provide rest and renewal to these centres.

Join me, senior yoga teacher and trainer Margot Porter, for my advanced Yoga for Menopause Wellbeing teacher training course.

I am the creator of Yoga for Menopause Wellbeing YTT the first training to educate and empower yoga teachers in Australia about the power of the menopause transformation.

As a senior teacher, I’ve been coaching and guiding women through their Sagescence transformation for the last seven years and teaching women yoga for over 15 years.

How often have you heard it say that inversions bathe the brain and the glands within, such as the hypothalamus, pituitary, and pineal, with fresh blood?

Is this true? And if so, can they help with menopause brain fog?

Inversions are a group of poses where the head is below the heart, for example, standing forward fold, down dog, and even child’s pose.

Here’s what I’ve been taught over the years.

🩸Improves blood flow to the brain delivering oxygen and nutrients to nourish brain cells and regulate neurotransmitters.

🧠 Increases cognitive function through, again, increases in blood flow, and this helps memory and cognitive function.

😀Improves mood by releasing endorphins, such as dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin improving mood and increasing attention. This may help with anxiety and depression.

⚖️Balances and cleanses the nervous system by stimulating the pituitary and pineal glands.

🧠The brain is a very sensitive organ and it likes a consistent environment. It does not want too little or too much blood. It will die without adequate perfusion and veins can burst with too much blood volume (stroke).

🧠The brain tries to keep too much blood entering through the blood/brain barrier: a layer of tightly packed cells that act as a filter limiting what is able to pass into the brain.

🧠 There is no evidence that blood pressure and volume change within the brain delivering oxygen to support this fact. Is it a myth?

🧐Curiously, inverted poses stimulate venous blood flow toward the heart, where it’s sent to the lungs to be reoxygenated.

This MAY lower your heart rate and allow for better oxygen uptake- think the Bohr affect but that’s another story about the dance between oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood.

So, can inversions help with brain fog?

Potentially, yes, from calming the nervous system but not from having an increased flow of blood to our brains.
